Tips & Techniques 3: Using the Stylus

One of my favorite ways to enhance my images is with a tool called a stylus.

A stylus is a pencil sized tool often made from wood or plastic with a rounded tipped piece of metal extending from both ends. The tips can vary in size. I have a few, but often use one with a tiny tip. The stylus tools shown here are from Royal Brush Manufacturing, Merrillville, Indiana.

"Drawing" with the stylus
Practice using the stylus by "drawing" on 80lb. cover paper. Draw with the tip of the stylus making lines, dots, snails, stars etc. You'll see the shadow of the indentation you have made on the paper. (Indentations have been enhanced for the photograph). Next comes the fun part.

Applying color
Apply a layer of colored pencils using medium pressure and watch your design pop out! Continue to experiment, noticing that even with quite a bit of pressure the colored pencil does not jump into the lines you have drawn.

Stylus techniques - "Tiles"
Now, how to use technique... Stylus work can be used in the negative space very effectively. Try designing "tiles" behind the 3 Flowers (# 2007).

Stylus techniques - Men's sweater

I also like to create visual texture as in my image of the Men's Sweater (# 2033).
